In healthcare, we know we can’t always control the behavior of others; however, we can control how we prepare and respond. MNRH prioritizes nurse safety.
In 2023, we established the Patient Safety and Visitor Code of Conduct. This targeted approach ensures that individuals who behave in any manner that violates our code of conduct are identified and held accountable for inappropriate or unsafe actions. Patients or visitors who violate our code of conduct must sign the document, acknowledging that they understand and will adhere to the rules and guidelines we have set forth. Failure to sign this document or comply with our safety standards may result in their removal from the premises, a ban from MedStar Health facilities, and potential legal action. This document is available here.
To help keep you safe, we’ve enhanced security measures and protocols across our hospital.
- In partnership with Masada Healthcare Consulting, we offer live verbal de-escalation and physical skills training for associates, units, and departments. The schedule for Workplace Violence Prevention Training is available through MedStar SiTEL at sitelms.org.
- We’ve installed new technologies to reduce the likelihood of a security breach, ensure compliance with hospital safety standards, and effectively respond to threats, including:
- Video Management System
- Access Control System/Increased Door Security
- Panic/Duress Alarms
- Increased Security & Safety Signage
- Infant Abduction System
- Intrusion Detection System
- The Workplace Violence Prevention De-escalation: Recognize, Accept, Plan (RAP) SiTEL training trains associates to manage difficult situations and incidents of aggressive behavior safely. Register here.
- We’ve implemented safety tools to warn and protect our associates from potential workplace violence, such as:
- MedConnect banner bar and Purple Safety flag/sign to identify patients with a history of violence
- Safety Contracts, Barring Notices, and Peace/Protective Orders
- SafetyNet for reporting workplace violence
We each play a role in keeping ourselves, our colleagues, and our patients safe.
- Use the RAP method to diffuse potentially dangerous situations before they escalate:
- Recognize – acknowledge feelings and issues
- Accept – validate feelings and issues with respect
- Plan – offer options and steps to move forward
- Protect your vehicle and belongings:
- Park in well-lit areas
- Close and lock all windows and doors
- Do not leave your vehicle running
- Do not leave your keys or valuable belongings in your vehicle
- Always remain alert and be aware of your surroundings
- Stay in well-lit areas
- Walk confidently with your head up and make eye contact with others
- Secure your purse or bag between your arm and body
